Duration:
Twelve sessions, approximately six weeks, two 2 hour meetings per week (flexible)

Course Objectives:

  • Broad introductions to a range of topical issues
  • Intensive English language practice
  • Exposure to terminology and specialized language
  • Presentation & Interviewing Skills
  • Opportunity for self-reflection on career plans
  • Increase motivation and confidence building

Topics:

  • 4 sessions on ‘development issues’
  • 4 sessions on ‘How NGOs work and the roles of NGO staff’
  • 4 sessions on ‘skills and strategies’ for language learning and job applications.
  • Ongoing simulated application process.
  • Research assignments and presentations by participants.

















Approach & Materials:

  • Active and participatory learning methodology
  • Reading materials for each session
  • Realia: NGO staff contracts, codes of practice, volunteer placement descriptions, project reports, funding requests, NGO mission statements etc.
  • Topic related video and audio material for the double purpose of language training and stimulating research and debate
  • Extensive use of online resources and real world examples
  • The class blog
